worksite safety
Pembina works steadily towards the goal of zero accidents and no harm in the workplace. We want all our employees and contractors to safely return home to their families after a productive day at work.
Our goal: zero accidents & injuries
Pembina's loss management policies, programs and procedures are designed to help achieve this goal and we're seeing results. On our Musreau Deep Cut Project, completed in 2012, we achieved over 426,000 person-hours worked without a lost-time injury and drove over 1,450,000 kilometres without incident, a true testament of excellence in safety practices.
We're able to deliver this type of performance by reinforcing our commitment to a safe worksite through contractor screening, frequent safety meetings, rigorous project inspection and constant review of potential hazards, including close call reporting. By aggressively reporting and assessing close call incidents we can learn from what almost went wrong.
At Pembina, we're also learning from the best practices of others, which include actively participating in the Alberta Gas Oil Pipeline Operators Safety Council and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association's Health and Safety and Pipeline Integrity Work Groups. Other steps we're taking to eliminate accidents and injuries include:
-
Incident reporting and tracking systems and the identification of process improvements that prevent incident re-occurrence.
-
Monthly Incident Review Panel (IRP) meetings to review and discuss more serious incidents including operations, management, safety and executive personnel.
-
Drug and alcohol testing for employees working in safety sensitive positions.
-
Mandatory driver education through the AMA Collision Avoidance program.
-
Banning hand held cell phone use while driving.
-
A Backing-in Policy that requires company drivers to do a spot check behind their vehicles before backing in at a work site or facility.
-
A Dusk to Dawn Policy that requires employees driving on company ime, during dusk to dawn, to reduce their speeds by 10 km/h from posted limits in rural areas.
